Evolution ofTelecentre

The third version of the telecentre model saw a move from being community spaces towards becoming innovation villages, which aimed to incubate innovative grassroots applications of ICTs capable of stimulating development within Malaysia’s isolated rural and indigenous communities.

Currently, there are four flagship applications under eBario innovation village project, namely: i)    Radio Bario, Malaysias first community radio station began broadcasting October 2011;
i)   Low-cost aerial photography for community mapping using tethered weather balloons for making maps that support claims for indigenous land rights;
ii)  ICTs for traditional botanical knowledge to preserve and pass on knowledge;
iii)  ICTs for oral history recording, broadcasting and archiving.

The telecentre 3.0 also comprises of the Telecentre Programmes for Orang Asli (TPOA) Project. TPOA is a community-university based initiative in partnership with the Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA). The project is committed towards developing the community telecentre as a platform for enhancing quality of life through mobilizing the community, building capacities, identifying programmatic gaps, and impacting social policy.
