Community Artisan Fellowship Programme

Gayut Lim, a master Penan artisan from Kampung Long Lamai in Ulu Baram, is the first-ever Community Artisan Fellow under this prestigious program. His selection marks a significant milestone for the fellowship, as Gayut brings his rich cultural knowledge and exceptional craftsmanship to the forefront. Known for his intricate Lalit creations—plated items crafted from specific wild wood species—and his captivating paintings that reflect the timeless narratives of the Penan people, Gayut’s work embodies the essence of his heritage.
In addition to his visual artistry, Gayut is also a gifted musician, excelling in playing traditional Penan instruments such as the Keringot (nose flute) and Oreng (jaw harp). His ability to fuse cultural traditions with modern artistry makes him a powerful ambassador for Penan culture, and his fellowship will enable him to expand the reach of his work beyond Sarawak, throughout Malaysia, and beyond.
The Community Artisan Fellowship Programme was conceptualized by Professor Narayanan A/L N. Kulathu Ramaiyer, with the design and coordination led by Noorhaslina Senin and supported by a dedicated program committee. Renowned Sarawak artist and FACA lecturer Sylvester Wielding Jussem serves as the primary mentor, offering guidance and support alongside Noorhaslina Senin and Doris Manying.
The Community Artisan Fellowship Programme, an initiative by the Institute of Social Informatics & Technological Innovations (ISITI) and the Faculty of Applied & Creative Arts (FACA) at University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), is a groundbreaking effort to empower rural community artisans by providing them with a platform to enhance their skills, preserve their cultural heritage, and elevate their artistic practices. This fully sponsored program offers a rare opportunity for artisans to receive personalized mentoring, work in an academic environment, and showcase their creative works to a broader audience.
Each fellowship is customized to the artisan’s individual talents, cultural background, and development potential, providing the space and support needed to grow their craft. Participants engage in mentorship, guided by expert faculty from UNIMAS, and are encouraged to produce original works, participate in exhibitions, and share their experiences with the academic community. This program bridges the gap between academia and community artistry, fostering a deeper connection between traditional craftsmanship and modern artistic practices.
